Polymarket vs a Sportsbook: How Prediction-Market Odds Differ

Polymarket is a prediction market, not a bookmaker. How its peer-to-peer odds, no built-in vig, live pricing and cash-out differ from a traditional sportsbook.

The guide

Polymarket feels like betting, but it isn't a sportsbook — it's a prediction market. The difference changes the odds you get, who you're trading against, and what you can do with a position before it settles. Here's how the two compare.

Who sets the odds

A sportsbook sets the line and takes the other side of your bet — its profit comes from pricing that line with a margin. On Polymarket there's no house: you buy shares from other traders, and the price is wherever supply meets demand. The “odds” are the market's live consensus probability, not a number a bookmaker chose.

The vig

Sportsbook odds bake in the vig (juice) — the two sides of a coin-flip are usually priced around -110 each, so the implied probabilities sum to more than 100%. That overround is the book's edge. A clean Polymarket market sums to roughly 100¢, so there's no built-in margin skimmed off the top; you pay trading costs on the trade itself instead. For a bettor, tighter pricing means the number you see is closer to the true implied probability.

Live pricing and cash-out

A traditional bet locks in the odds at the moment you place it. A Polymarket position is a tradable asset: the price moves continuously, and you can sell your shares back into the market at any time before resolution to lock a profit or cut a loss — the market's native version of a cash-out, with no book deciding the terms. If your 62¢ favorite climbs to 85¢ at halftime, you can sell and bank the move.

What you can bet on

Sportsbooks run sports. Prediction markets run anything with a verifiable outcome — elections, economics, crypto prices and pop culture alongside sports and esports. The flip side: liquidity varies by market, so a niche line can be thinner than a sportsbook's, and you should check the 24h volume before sizing up.

Reading the edge

Because it's a market, you also get data a sportsbook never shows you: who is on each side, how sharp those wallets are, and how the odds have moved. Polynyx surfaces live Polymarket odds on the markets page, ranks the most profitable wallets on the leaderboard, and (if you want to know how the pricing works first) explains it in how Polymarket odds work.

Polymarket availability and eligibility depend on your jurisdiction; Polynyx is independent analytics, not a sportsbook or betting operator, and nothing here is financial advice.
